October 11- 15

The kids are thriving and growing due to the constant care and positive feedback from home and school. Thank you for your continued support!

Math: Be on the look out for Chapter One Test to come home. Kids will be asked to have you sign it, just to be sure they remember to hand it over. And it is a way to practice organization with home/school folder. Continue math fact practice. We are working on multiplication and there will be a heavy focus on word problems. 4.NBT.B.5

Reading: Reading: We begin our first novel study of the year with Bunnicula, written by James and Deborah Howe. RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Grammar: Identifying Parts of speech: noun, verb, adjectives and adverbs

Writing: Responding to written prompts. Using the computer to compose instead of play 😊

Religion: October is the month of the Rosary. Discussion and reflection on the Rosary.

Emotional Learning: With your child, create a “Rethink It!” chart to display at home. Make a list of questions that everyone can use to rethink when emotions are taking over and you just need a little help to see things in a different way.

Cursive: Capital letters

Social Studies: Chapter 2 reading and response. Kids are learning to write answers in complete sentences and find information in the text.

 

October 4 – 8

The first MAP testing is done! Students completed the math and reading portion. They worked so hard and did their personal best. This week students will complete the Science and English Language Arts MAP.

  • Thursday, October 7th Dress Uniform Day for our All School Mass. We will ZOOM in to the liturgy led by our 8th
  • Please remember to send your student with raincoats! Recess is outdoors RAIN or shine.
  • We have begun using planners so students take responsibility of their learning. They must have the planner daily to make this work. Help your child by making sure the planner is in backpack ready for school.

September 26 – October 1

Students are settling down and showing more personal responsibility for their learning. To support that effort, we will begin basic training in how to use the St. John planners. Students will write down reminders of upcoming events and any unfinished school work that is to be done at home. Help your child by asking them to open their planner each evening to check what needs to be done.

Religion: Seasons of Creation continued.

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic

Reading: Making connections with informational and Literary text

Writing: Building a strong foundation with an introduction to 3 types of writing: Narrative, informative, and Opinion

Grammar: Personal Pronouns

Other: MAP Reading and Math testing. Hispanic History Mont

September 20 – 24

Curriculum for the week:

Math: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.4

Writing: Begin unit focused on Opinion Writing. Students will support a point of view with reasons and information. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1

Grammar: Study and learn about prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs. Review nouns and verbs.

Religion: Learn and reflect on the Seasons of Creation.

Social Studies: Hispanic Heritage Month study and banner project.

Reading with Mrs.Halley: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text. Read and respond to informational text related to Hispanic Heritage. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2

 

Week of September 12

Math: “Consensograms” collect and analyze class data.
Problem solving using “YouCubed” as well as growth mindset for mathematics.
Writing:  Discuss “Why do we write?”  Students will also complete baseline writing assessments.
Social Studies: Hispanic History Month activities and discussions. Also, an introduction to the Washington State History Textbook.
Religion: Learn about our  Saint of the Month: Mother Teresa.
The class will also be introduced to the Season of Creation. The next five weeks lead to the feast of St. Francis. This time, the Season of Creation, emphasizes the need for prayer and action as we care for our environment.
Second Step: Ms. Shaw will join us every Thursday this Trimester for a whole class lesson. This Thursday’s lesson will focus on  Emotion Management; “What is Rethinking” 
Grammar: 10 minutes a day! Review this week.
Reading with Mrs Halley: Strategy Practice and introduction to close reading.
Additional Activities: Growth Mindset Work, Art: Behind the Mask!   and Buddy Cards

Dear Families,
Thank you for your support during this challenging and ever-changing school year. Your frequent check ins and monthly ” pick me up” gifts really helped raise our spirits!
Thank you for the end of year gift of the Mimosa Kit, handmade cards, gift cards and thoughtful treats! It means a lot and I truly appreciate your kindness.
We have been through a lot this year. Although our time together in Fourth Grade has come to a close, I am not going anywhere! I will hold a special place in my heart for the class of 2020/2021 and for our shared experience.

May 24 – May 28

The class completed the MAP Tests for reading and math this week. The results will be shared with report cards.  Students have been working so hard in all academic areas and since we have been back on campus, we have seen some amazing growth. Also, the opportunity to interact with peers has allowed the kids to grow socially and emotionally. Thank you for your support as we continue to   help the kids in their journey during this unprecedented time!

Reading: from Mrs Halley: Check your child’s backpack. Mrs. Halley sent home Achieve Level Set reports this week. Students are asked to have a parent sign the envelope and return it to Mrs. Halley. Thank you.

Math:  Student will wrap up chapter 12 with a math test Monday  and begin Chapter 13 Algebra Perimeter and Area. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.2 and CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.3

Science: Due to Map testing our Science from last week was pushed forward to this week: Students will explore the questions: How does the speed of an object relate to the energy of the object? 4.ps3.1
Writing:  Students are almost done with their Greek Mythology Trading Card Project. Students will begin to write their own Greek Myth this week.
Religion: We will learn about the Beatitudes this week.
P.S.: After we completed a symmetry art project involving origami the students have been fascinated with the art of paper folding. During our free time they find very cool projects to try. If you have any origami paper to donate to the class that would be great!

May 17- 21

Hope you enjoyed the beautiful Seattle sunshine this weekend!
Student will take the MAP Test for Math and Reading this Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  We encourage plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast to be ready for  testing.

Writing: Greek Mythology Study and Trading Card Project. Students will begin to write their own Greek Myth.
Art project– Project for 8th graders
Religion: Students will be asked to reflect on intentions that come to the aid of others and thanksgiving for our own blessings.

Religion: 10 Commandments.  Continue learning and reciting the St. Francis Peace Prayer.

Reading with Mrs. Halley: We are beginning a small group novel study with books students chose to read.
